A journey to Lang Toi - My Village

Back in 2005 in Hanoi, Lang Toi - My Village was created by director Tuan Le, performance director Nguyen Lan Maurice, music director Nhat Ly Nguyen and choreographer Tan Loc Nguyen. It has toured around the world from 2009 to 2012, with over 300 shows in France, Holland, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Hungary, Germany and Hong Kong, represents poetic beauty of Northern Vietnam’s village life under new cirque approach, breath-taking cirque and rhythmic dance, juggling, acrobatic movements and distinct folk music played more than 20 musical instruments.

Lang Toi - My Village welcomes audience to a childhood memory in the countryside, where farming, building activities, traditional games, lifestyle of Northern villagers are recreated by ancestral bamboo props. Moving and transforming constantly, connecting realms, transporting audience from rivers to mountains, from soothing shelter to fiery battle, this wondrous use of such a humble daily life object elevated the bamboo trunk to the level of a symbol that weaves Vietnamese cultural stories, and mark the groundbreaking creativity of the authors in redefining performing art genres. Le Monde stated that Lang Toi is a phenomenon that uses typical traditional bamboo prop during the spectacle.

A O SHOW

The name ‘A O’ derives from ‘Lang Pho’, which means ‘village and city’. The show depicts the charming beauty and cultural richness of Vietnamese life in the countryside, in contrast with the nation’s racing urbanization. The show is a unique mix of bamboo circus, acrobatic acts, dance, and theatrical visual art. The live music echoes Vietnamese Southern work songs. All in all, this beautiful blend of genres creates a unique stage language, which well captures the essence of Vietnam’s fascinating culture.

Meaning ‘going in circle’ in the highland tribe K'ho's tongue, Teh Dar embrace and preserve beautiful and diverse Vietnamese tribal cultures.
